Through the Bamboo play was developed with funds from the Toronto Arts Council’s Playwrights Program in 2011 and the Ontario Arts Council’s Theatre Creators’ Reserve/Recommender Grants for Theatre Creators, with referrals from Carousel Theatre, fu-GEN Theatre, the Toronto Fringe Festival, and Young People’s Theatre in 2013; Cahoots Theatre in 2014; and Theatre Direct in 2018. It had public readings hosted by Kapisanan Philippine Centre for Arts and Culture, Carlos Bulosan Theatre, and San Francisco’s Bindlestiff Studio. In 2016, Through the Bamboo was workshopped with dramaturgy by Paula Wing, and had two public readings at Soulpepper Theatre as part of their Tiger Bamboo Festival. In 2017, the piece was workshopped and showcased again at Soulpepper’s Shen Development Series, with dramaturgy by Nina Lee Aquino. In 2018, it was workshopped with Marie Beath Badian and the second-year students from the Theatre Arts Performance Program at Humber College. Nina Lee Aquino dramaturged Through the Bamboo from 2017 to 2020.
